Ever dreamed of sleeping in a cave? Not the dark, damp kind… this is next-level luxury! Picture a four-poster bed, a gorgeous copper bathtub, a fully equipped kitchenette, and dreamy outdoor spaces made for stargazing, soaking and slow mornings.
Carved into the mountains just outside Montagu (2.5 hours from Cape Town), The Cave House sleeps two and offers complete privacy. The natural rock formations of the cave are beautifully integrated into the design, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere both inside and out.
What we loved
Sleeping in a cave was absolutely surreal and such a bucket-list experience! We couldn’t believe how warm and cozy it was, even in the middle of winter! The copper bath is definitely a showstopper, and we loved how there is no shortage of outdoor spaces to unwind, from the wood-fired hot tub to the pool and fire pit — each offering its own way to soak up the stunning surroundings.
The Space
Kitchenette
There’s a fully equipped kitchenette with a freestanding gas oven, fridge/freezer, whistling kettle, coffee machine, coffee grinder and milk frother. Coffee beans, loose leaf tea, sugar, rusks, 250ml milk, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt & pepper are provided, as well as complimentary Abrikoos Kloof wine.
Living/Dining/Outdoors
The space has been designed to enjoy the outdoors. There is a spacious wooden deck with a dining area and comfy lounge seating, perfect for relaxing and taking in the views with a G&T in hand. Steps lead down to a fire pit and wood fired hot tub and there is a private reservoir pool just a short walk away. Inside, you can dine at the cozy breakfast nook while taking in the views from the large sash window.
Bedroom
The bedroom opens onto the deck and you can open the doors fully to enjoy the breathtaking views from bed. The extra-length four-poster king-sized bed comes with luxurious linen and extra blankets for winter and there is also a fireplace for the cooler months.
Bathroom
The open plan bathroom features a stunning copper bathtub as the centerpiece. There is an outdoor shower off to the side of the deck if you prefer being more in nature. Fijn amenities are also provided. The toilet is separate for privacy and features a Victorian toilet with a view.

Our Top Tips
- Pack your hiking shoes, mountain bike and swimming gear – there are 300 hectares of secluded wilderness to explore and your own private reservoir pool to take a dip in after
- They offer breakfast, picnic, and dinner boxes to make your stay even more special
- You can also arrange for a private chef to prepare a three or five-course wine pairing experience
- You’ll want to grab your groceries beforehand, as once you arrive, you won’t want to leave! Spar Montagu is a good option for the basics
- Factor in some time to explore the town of Montagu on your drive up – it’s super quaint and there are some really nice coffee shops
